The Kanawha-Charleston Health Department, the West Virginia Health Network, and the Kanawha County Emergency Ambulance Authority today announced a drive-through health fair to be held at the Shawnee Sports Complex on Thursday, November 4, 2021, from 1-6 pm.
The drive-through event will consist of free seasonal flu and COVID-19 vaccines, free blood pressure and blood glucose checks, free at-home colon cancer screening tests, free car seat checks, free smoke alarms, free health education handouts, and free or discounted routine bloodwork. Additionally, health fair attendees will be entered into a door prize drawing and there will prizes for children who attend.
“Throughout the COVID-19 pandemic, data has shown us that folks aren’t seeking their annual checkups that may prevent a medical condition or diagnose an early medical condition. We are very excited to partner with so many local agencies to deliver a one-stop-shop of healthcare tools,” said Dr. Sherri Young, Health Officer and Executive Director of the Kanawha Charleston Health Department. “If the health fair can help one person, we consider that a success,” she added.
Michelle Coon, West Virginia Health Network President, said, “The West Virginia Health Network is pleased to collaborate with the Kanawha-Charleston Health Department, the Kanawha County Emergency Ambulance Authority, and all of our community health partners to present the drive-through health fair. We recognize that preventative care is something that has fallen behind during the COVID-19 pandemic, and we hope that residents will take advantage of this opportunity to address critical healthcare needs.”
Monica Mason, Executive Director of the Kanawha County Emergency Ambulance Authority, said, “The drive-through health fair will provide an opportunity for community residents to receive blood pressure and glucose screenings to help them better understand their current health situation. Offering the Health Fair in a drive-through setting will allow individuals to safely remain in their vehicle and receive vital educational materials on preventive healthcare measures.”
Participants in the event include Charleston Fire Department, Kanawha County Homeland Security & Emergency Management, Kanawha County Commission, CAMC, Cabin Creek Health System, Partners in Health Network, FamilyCare Health Centers, West Virginia Health Right, Kanawha County Sheriff’s Office, Prestera Center, The Health Plan, Blue Cross/Blue Shield, Aetna, United Healthcare, UniCare, the Alzheimer’s Association-West Virginia Chapter, and the American Cancer Society.
Health fair attendees interested in the free or discounted bloodwork are encouraged to save time by visiting the health department’s website at www.kchdwv.org to download and complete the necessary paperwork in advance.
In addition to this health fair, additional events are being planned throughout the Kanawha Valley in the coming weeks.
